Roofing Service Areas Across Atlantic County

All 23 municipalities — 13 cities, 6 townships, 3 boroughs and 1 town — grouped by the conditions that actually affect a roof there.

Atlantic County covers a genuinely wide range of conditions. Five municipalities sit on barrier islands at or near sea level. Nine sit inland in the Pine Barrens, some more than twenty miles from the ocean. Galloway Township alone is the largest municipality in New Jersey by total area, and Hamilton Township has the largest land area of any municipality in the state.

That is why these pages are grouped rather than listed alphabetically, and why each one is written separately. A roof in Longport and a roof in Weymouth Township have almost nothing in common beyond being roofs, and pretending otherwise would produce advice that is useless in both places.

New Jersey municipalities carry one of five legal types, and the type is part of the official name. We use them correctly — Buena Borough and Buena Vista Township are not the same place, and neither are Egg Harbor City and Egg Harbor Township.

Atlantic County, grouped by roofing conditions

Each group shares a genuine geographic characteristic, and each municipality page is written for its own situation.

Barrier island communities(5)

Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport share Absecon Island; Brigantine has its own. All five sit at or near sea level with open water on more than one side, and they are the only municipalities in the county where oceanfront wind, salt-laden air and barrier-island exposure genuinely apply.

The large townships(2)

Egg Harbor Township and Galloway Township between them hold more than a third of the county's population and run from bayfront marsh at one edge to Pinelands interior at the other. A roof's exposure here depends entirely on which part of the township it stands in.

The bay and meadows corridor(7)

Mainland municipalities with tidal water nearby but conventional pitched-roof housing stock. They get real open-water wind fetch across the meadows and bays without the constant salt spray of the islands.

Inland towns and centres(4)

Hammonton, Hamilton Township, Egg Harbor City and Buena sit well away from tidal water, in or beside the Pinelands. Their roofing concerns are trees, shade, debris and freeze-thaw — plus, in Hamilton Township and Hammonton, a genuine commercial building stock.

Pinelands and rural municipalities(5)

Five low-density municipalities covering well over 170 square miles between them. Houses sit among the trees, outbuildings need as much attention as the house, and continuous pine needle fall is the defining maintenance problem.
